Online Medical Degrees

Health and medical science graduates are gaining popularity. The ten fastest growing jobs are healthcare related. A great introduction for many is earning an online degree in health and medical sciences. For some, a medical degree achieved online offers an additional building block for continuing professional medical training. For others, it is the easiest way into an entry-level position in the healthcare industry. The boom in health and medical careers are absolute with the top ten fastest growing jobs in such professions as physician assistants, medical assistants, physical therapists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and home care aides. Before turning to a particular field of study in the medical industry, a broad undergraduate education in areas such as liberal arts and sciences must be obtained. Before the MCAT exams are even to be considered, an undergraduate must pass the following courses before medical school acceptance. All medical schools require a baccalaureate (BA, AB, BS, or equivalent) degree, with rare exceptions.

The usual course prerequisites for both MD and DO schools are:

  • 1 year of Biology or Zoology (with lab)
  • 1 year of Inorganic Chemistry (with lab)
  • 1 year of Organic Chemistry (with lab)
  • 1 year of Physics (with lab)

Some schools require english, humanities, calculus, or biochemistry as well. While many courses can be offered online, it is important to know which courses are available to you and what is needed to accomplish an online degree in the medical field. You can enroll at a local college or university as a non-degree student and simply take the prerequisites. Additionally, you might consider enrolling in a formal post-baccalaureate pre-medical program offered by many of colleges and universities in response to an increasing number of students changing careers into medicine.

Students can specialize in fields such as alternative medicine, clinical laboratory science, dental hygiene, health information technology, healthcare administration, pharmacy, radiological science, respiratory therapy, nursing, nutrition, and much more.

There is no shortfall of licensed health professionals, nor is there when it comes to the demand, where salaries begin in the $30,000 range after graduation, with advancement to $55,000 after some work experience. Graduate and professional programs, however, have increasing earning potential. While no education program can guarantee future salary or employment, health and medical science graduates can expect plentiful job opportunities and rising salaries in this high demanded profession!
